« Pour sa première réalisation, Eva Ionesco a choisi un sujet autobiographique, elle qui fut modèle pour les photos érotiques et fétichistes de sa mère, Irina Ionesco, de 4 à 10 ans. Le film dépeint avec justesse et cruauté la relation passionnelle, violente, qui unie une mère fantasque, absorbée par son art, à sa fille, égérie malgré elle. Violetta, petite fille érotisée, dépossédée de son enfance, évoque un personnage presque homonyme, Violet (interprétée par Brooke Shields, alors âgée de douze ans), héroïne du film de Louis Malle, La Petite , dernier film d’Henri-Georges Clouzot, dans lequel un lien malsain s’établissait entre un photographe et sa modèle, tour à tour fascinée puis dégoûtée par le fait de poser. Dans ce film, le photographe disait que ce qui était important chez un modèle, c’était la soumission. Violetta, soumise à sa mère, finira peu à peu par être délivrée de son emprise.

Pour ma part, j’ai été fascinée par ce film. Fascinée par l’époque, par le look Old Hollywood version 70′s d’Isabelle Huppert (imaginé par Catherine Baba), par la collection de fétiches et de curiosités de l’appartement d’Irina, par l’ambivalence entre candeur et décadence. Pour moi, c’est un film avant tout visuel, mais je ne pourrais pas objective, il en appelle trop à mon univers ! Mais ce film m’a aussi dérangée, par cette même ambivalence candeur/décadence, qui se retrouve dans le rapport de ces deux femmes. C’est ce malaise que l’on retrouve sur les photos d’Irina, dont j’ai toujours admiré le travail, tant qu’il ne franchit pas les limites. Le film, comme les photos d’Irina m’ont rappelé l’atmosphère de What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (avec Bette Davis et Joan Crawford), un film cruel autour de l’innocence pervertie et de la jalousie tyrannique.
