Corpus Christi 7-Day Film Project boasts 44 flicks

— For Matt McClung it's the best time of the year. For Jimmy Willden it's a chance to branch out from work and embrace his creativity. For Joe Hilliard, it's a cause.

The 2011 Corpus Christi 7-Day Film Project culminates at the Harbor Playhouse on Saturday with the screening of 44 films, separated into five flights.

The project began as a labor of love for Hilliard, a movie buff who was distressed at the amount of independent films shown in Corpus Christi when he moved back here from Houston. His first step was to form the Corpus Christi Film Society.

"I created the film society with the hope at the time of trying to create a dedicated group of people who would go to art films on the rare occasion they would come to town," Hilliard said. "It kind of morphed into 'let's start a film event.'"

Hoping to draw enough movies to fill up a day, the project started out bigger than they dreamed.

"That first year we did it we had 36 teams show up," Hilliard said. "It's like, 'Wait a second. Who are these people? Where do these people come from?' There was this community of people whose needs were not being met."

The process is simple. The society hosted a casting call on June 22. Then each filmmaker has one week, starting at 6:30 p.m. July 6 to film, edit and turn in a movie not more than eight minutes long.

As word spreads and filmmakers from past years return, the movies are growing more diverse.

"There were a lot of drug deals gone bad the first couple of years," Hilliard said. "I think what people have learned over the years is original story is usually rewarded."

McClung, a veteran of the process despite starting his senior year in high school next week, said the festival has created a network of cast and crews in the area.

"I think it's great and I think it's really, really cool how it's getting bigger," McClung said.

It's getting attention elsewhere too. Willden first heard of the project when he was still in Austin.

Beware Of Corpus Christ: The Movie--even Non-catholic Christians ...

Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. where do we stand as Christians? At the risk of a bit of inconvenience, I'm forwarding this to all I think would appreciate it too. Please help us prevent such offenses against our Lord. It will take you less than 2 minutes! If you are not interested, and do not have the 2 Minutes it will take to do this , please don't complain when God does not have time for you, because He is far busier than we are. A disgusting film set to appear in America later this year depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theatres for a while. It's called Corpus Christi ' which means 'The Christ Body.' It's revolting mockery of our Lord. But we can make a difference. That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we will be able to prevent this film from showing in America and South Africa . "Religion isn't always the best place to poke fun," from the article. And yet that's all that these money hungry pseudo-bullies (oh, let's make fun of people who, if they follow their faith, turn the other cheek or at worst, express verbal disapproval! What a challenge!) seem capable of these days. People who pathologically make fun of Christians are poseur bullies.
