Sporting goods chain, clothing stores to plug holes in Huck Finn Shopping Center

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- There are signs of life in the vacant spaces in Hannibal's Huck Finn Shopping Center, with a national sporting goods store and two clothing stores moving in and a Sears Hometown Store settling in.

Construction crews have begun work inside the former Steve and Barry's anchor store on what will be a Dunham's Sporting Goods store.

City construction permits in Dunham's name were issued for the building about two weeks ago, and the store is on track to open before the holidays, said Harold Fry of Hauck Holdings, which owns the shopping center.

Fry, Hauck's vice president of leasing, said Dunham's outdoors-focused merchandise, including hunting and fishing gear, "in many ways should complement" neighboring Hibbett Sports' athletic supplies.

Although it is still a few months away from opening, Dunham's already is listed on Hauck's website as an anchor at Huck Finn.

Dunham's replaces the Sears Hometown Store that temporarily had set up shop at Steve and Barry's after former owner Adrain Vanos parted ways with his Sears franchise last winter to open an independent shop in his location on Mo. 168. Before that, Steve and Barry's had sat vacant since shortly before the chain shuttered in late 2008.

The Sears Hometown Store has moved into the former Goody's store next door and has renovated that building's facade with the Sears logo.

On the other side of the shopping center, Glik's has begun advertising job openings at a store to open in October in the former Maurices storefront.

Maurices moved several weeks ago to the nearby River Bend Plaza, a few doors down from Walmart. Fry said Hauck had inked a deal with Glik's before Maurices moved.

"We didn't miss a beat there," he said.

Glik's will fill a niche somewhat different from Maurices, Fry said.

Arriving at a recent movie premier with her husband Mathew Broderick, Parker set the international fashion industry all atwitter when she wore a less-than-$10 blue and white floral dress. Given our current copycat-celebrity culture this at least means that starstruck young women in America can at least dip into their purses and achieve SJP’s look without breaking the bank.
