India's industrial outpost
The Stocksbridge steelworks in South Yorkshire are strangely silent. Its furnaces are not of the variety of steam roaring, they are small, purring vacuum arc furnaces that use electric current to re-melt steel. Beer keg-sized ingots made from scrap to a steel mill in Rotherham near sister are cleaned, welded to a heel and lowered into the furnace. The melting drop by drop takes 12-14 hours, removes impurities and strengthens the steel. Once cooled and tested, the steel blocks are ready to be used in the aerospace and oil drilling, where high-strength steel is popular.
Steel mills were once part of Corus, an Anglo-Dutch firm, and before that of British Steel. They are now owned by Tata Steel, which belongs to an Indian conglomerate that also makes cars, chemicals and tea. Tata Steel paid $ 12 billion (£ 6.1 billion) of Corus in 2007, after a bidding war with CSN, a Brazilian rival. The following year, Tata Motors bought Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for $ 2.3 billion. This purchase seems to have clever. This month, Land Rover has launched suggests, a mini-sport utility vehicle, which attracted 20,000 orders before been offered for sale.
Tata United Kingdom is now the largest manufacturer in the country, with nearly 40,000 workers, just before British Aerospace. Add in the services industries, Tata, such as consulting, and payroll tops 45,000 (see chart). His presence in Britain is part of a growing trend. Britain is second only to America as a destination for business investment in emerging markets, many of them from India.Tata purchase of Corus and JLR, as previously redemptions of Tetley Tea and the Brunner Mond chemical plants, eyebrows, and some anxiety at least two major questions: what Tata wants of its acquisitions, and what is the stewardship of the company and its JLR Stablemates mean for British industry?
Understanding the relationship Tata requires a look back at history. The company opened an office in London in 1907 to purchase supplies for its operations in India. This housed the first British company Tata, which Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a pioneer of IT outsourcing in India, set up a one-man shop in 1975. TCS personalized start from savings banks and insurers are seeking to update their systems at lower cost. It currently employs 4,900 people in Britain and is about thrice that number in India now based in England clients.
