Trout Art on Mandolin in Ephemera, empherma and Ephemerella ...
Not sure where to put this off the wall request, but "Ephemera" sounds like a good place to try. I'm having a custom F-style mandolin built. It's in the very early stages of construction and is scheduled for completion at the end of the year or early 2012. For those acquainted with mandolins there's usually ornamentation inlaid on the headstock, often in mother of pearl. Gibson mandolins set the standard with a couple motifs. Well that's all well and good, but I'm a rodmaker and angler. So I'm thinking of something different. I'd like to find drawings or pictures of trout done in line art or other styles which might be used to give my luthier some ideas/help in designing and inlaying the headstock. All options and styles, old and new, are open for consideration. It'll depend on what is aesthetically pleasing and what the luthier can actually make. If anyone has either pictures or links to suggest please pass them on.
Luthier is a young guy, Max Girouard, living and working in New Hampshire. I think Irene is pounding him this afternoon. I emailed him earlier today with this idea, but I don't know if he even has power right now. Actually Bob your avatar is also the type of thing I have in mind. Either a fish, a fly, or something that refers back to fly fishing. I just saw some generic clip art by Dave Whitlock that might work, too, if he would grant permission. Maybe even some very small fish shapes as fretboard indicators. I was also thinking about approaching Michael Simon to ask if he might grant permission.
Then there's maybe some classic Victorian type of artwork that might look good. I'm hoping to find some good ideas.
I'm also a hobbiest bamboo rod maker and a few years ago I built a rod for a luthier in Maine, by the name of Rolfe Gerhardt who makes Phoenix mandolins.
