Hikers rescued on Pacific Crest Trail
Two hikers from Hawaii were rescued from the Pacific Crest Trail on Wednesday after they were separated from each other Tuesday night.
Colleen Sanders was out of the woods by teams of search and rescue Tuesday night, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office Klamath County. Her boyfriend, Aaron Bettencort, was taken by helicopter at noon Wednesday. The couple was escorted to the Seven Mile Point of departure, where they continued their journey.
The couple was hiking the trail from Fish Lake and the Columbia River region. They left their camp near Deer Lake on Tuesday and headed north.Sanders was the fastest and the hiker went ahead, both with the intention of meeting in Butte shale 5 miles north.
Sanders waited 13 hours in Butte shale, then backtracked and Bettencort his camp, but was unable to locate it there. She called 911 when she returned to Butte Shale.
Bettencort was found on the Pacific Crest Trail between the campsite and shale Butte. He told rescuers that he had taken a wrong track and ended up walking the trails Cold Springs before returning to the Pacific Crest Trail. He did not have a cell phone or card.
Jackson County and Klamath County Sheriff's Office conducted the search and rescue operation. They were assisted by two helicopters, a National Guard and one from Jackson County.

Klamath Falls, Oregon - A couple from Hawaii was 30 miles into their trip when they realized that something was wrong.
Officials from the sheriff's office said Klamath County Honolulu Colleen Sanders called for help Tuesday afternoon.
Sanders and her boyfriend, Aaron Bettencort were the days hiking the Pacific Crest Trail when they were separated.
"I pulled on the track I turned around and there he was, then I turned around again and it was not," said Sanders.
Bettencort was late and took a wrong turn. Sanders became worried about her boyfriend and I panicked.
"I was running back and forth for miles screaming for him until I'm riding. I tried not to imagine the worst, "she said.
Meanwhile, Bettencort directed nearly 20 miles in the wrong direction.
"I was worried from the first minute we were separated worried if she was OK - it's pretty ugly up there," he said.
Colleen was only half of their equipment and short of food and water.
"I was very scared and crying - I was a mess," she said.
Crews were able to find Sanders from a GPS on her cell phone and has saved about 11 am Tuesday.
"It was a great help, we knew exactly where to go," said Deputy Brian Bryson with the Sheriff's Office Klamath County.
More than 30 volunteers spent the night in search of Bettencort.
"We had a helicopter before nightfall and crews on the ground and on horseback this morning," said Bryson.
Bettencort was rescued 14 miles from the Crystal Lodge of wood in Rocky Point on Wednesday afternoon. The couple emerge unscathed, but he learned a lesson for next time.
"Pack more intelligently in an emergency like this and set game plans every day," said Sanders.
The couple has more than 300 miles ahead of them and intends to continue his journey on Thursday morning.
