Women's Domestic Institute offered classes in homemaking: 'most important of ...
On June 3, 1920, Scranton further cemented its place in international education. On that day, the Women's Domestic Institute laid the cornerstone for its new facility on Wyoming Avenue, across from its parent academy, the International Correspondence Schools.
The Women's Domestic Institute was organized in 1916. The first student to enroll was Dorothy Hammerly of Brooklyn, N.Y. This was an era of applying scientific knowledge to the home front in areas such as home canning and nutrition. Many women took pride in perfecting their cooking, sewing and other skills so they could run more comfortable and efficient households. The school offered courses to help them do that.
"In America at least," P.P. Claxton, U.S. commissioner of education, wrote in the building's dedication program, "the home is the most important of all institutions" for it is the home that establishes the "physical, mental, and moral education" of children.
"Therefore," Mr. Claxton said, "of all the arts, those pertaining to home-making are the most important and of all the sciences, those which find their application in the home, making us intelligent about the home and its needs, are the most significant."
The attitude is sentimental, but it expresses the very real perspective that safe and healthful food and good hygiene - along with the comforts of home - were important. This attitude raised the status of the housewife to an educated professional.
Enrollment numbers show just how prevalent that attitude was. When the Women's Domestic Institute began in 1916, it had 3,022 students. The following year, that number rose to 8,946. In 1918, it was 17,008. By the time the school began construction of its new building in 1920, between 3,000 and 5,000 women were enrolling each month, and total enrollment was 66,500.
Most women were housewives, but by this time, a significant number of women did work outside the home, or even within it to earn money. Figures released when the cornerstone of the building was laid show for every 100 women enrolled in courses, 63 were married, 34 were single and three were widowed. Sixty-three percent of students studied to meet or enhance the requirements of their own home. Out of every 100, 17 planned to establish their own businesses, nine to prepare for a position in a business and 11 for both home and professional roles.
