Joke to you is death to me

SINNERS OR SAINTS? Youthful exuberance or disrespect? That is the question — as we (or some of us, at least) contemplate the amazing lapse in good sense by two of our top athletes last Sunday morning at Daegu. While our National Anthem was being played in recognition of the record-breaking performance of Jamaica's best athletes, the two stars "head tek dem" and they proceeded to put on a display like spoilt brats at kindergarten, romping in the sandbox. As an old Jamaican proverb says: "What is joke to you is death to me."

Four stood on the podium to receive gold for victory in the 4x100 men's relay. Nesta Carter and Michael Frater stood respectfully at attention, as protocol demands. Bigger Boss Bolt, however, could not resist the urge to clown it out. Yohan Blake was a willing sidekick and a new comedy act was formed — only it wasn't funny.

What could have prompted this act of disrespect? Was it the enormity of their victory, the world records they shattered, the gold medals they received, not to mention a big, fat payday? To quote ancestral wisdom, did they "fly past dem nest"? In the discussions which have followed since, not everybody is concerned about what went on. "Ah nuh nutten. Lef' de bwoy dem... Dem young."... "You know how young people stay nowadays." Then, "There are far more important national matters to be concerned about. Forget it. Move on." The minister of sports has asked the nation to accept the duo's apologies and forgive. Okay, but we still have to ask ourselves how two grown men who should know better, let us down so. Could it happen again?

The most worrying element of the story for me is that the Hon Mr Bolt is an accredited Ambassador for Jamaica, chosen to represent the rest of the nation to the world. We are ever so grateful for the fame which he has brought us by his superb performances ever since he burst on the world athletics scene. Forgive us, therefore, if we expect more of him when it comes to public conduct.
