Thousands gather to celebrate grand reopening of Lowe's in Sanford
SANFORD - From a stage in front of the rebuilt store, Mike Hollowell recognized the reopening of Lowe's Home Improvement as a sign of resilience, strength and perseverance in this Lee County community.
Hollowell is the 31-year-old manager of the Sanford store that was destroyed by an April 16 tornado.
On Thursday morning, the retail superstore on Horner Boulevard opened for the first time since that ominous day, when the twister killed two people in the county, injured about 50 and destroyed nearly 100 homes.
It was one of several deadly tornadoes that devastated parts of the state that day.
"At a time when neighborhoods in the Northeast face flooding following the aftermath of Hurricane Irene and communities fight fires across Texas," Hollowell said to the thousands who had gathered in the parking lot, "this grand reopening is a symbol of what can come when a community rallies together to overcome adversity and rebuild."
Barry Porter of the Triangle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross told people that Hollowell had received a phone call from President Obama recognizing him for the heroism he showed during the storm. Hollowell has been credited with saving multiple lives during the emergency.
The Lee County Senior High School Marching Yellow Jackets kicked off the ceremony at 10 a.m. with the lively number "Opening Production."
"It was important to me, really," said Danielle Bourgeois, a 15-year-old trumpeter in the band. "I've grown up here all my life. It's always there, and I pass by it every day."
Lowe's rebuilt the store in a grueling 145 days. Store employee Sheri Saunders said it took another 21 days for the staff to stock the shelves.
"This is back home," said Saunders, 30, who was temporarily transferred to Lowe's in Pittsboro during the rebuilding. "This is my first job when I moved here, and it means the world to me. It gives me chill bumps just thinking about it.

US home improvement and appliance retailer, Lowe’s , has revealed that it is undertaking a significant technological upgrade over the coming months. In addition to overhauling its website, the store is replacing decade old technology in its stores by deploying new technology and products such as iPhones.
The store chain is spending a record amount on technology over this fiscal year, replacing 72,000 computer screens with flat panels, adding WiFi to stores for customers to use and purchasing more than 42,000 iPhones (that’s 25 for every one of Lowe’s 1700 stores). The iPhones will replace scanner guns from the 1990s and staff will now be able to check product information or even view how-to videos, right as they stand next to the customer.
