Ithaca Residents Return to 1800s for Judy's Day

Cornell Plantations Ithaca rich agricultural history celebrated with the Festival's annual Family Day Learning Judy on Sunday. The event - a show for children on the FR Newman Arboretum with displays on harvesting 19th century - included the daily life of rural Forest Home, a former founder of Cornell community and located on what is now the land of the campus .

Since 1997, Day was honored Judy Judy Abrams, a former teacher and volunteer in the plantations, by educating the community about the plants found in the region, according to Billy Kepner, a volunteer at the event.During the off-years, the Cornell Plantations brings to the school curriculum in School District Ithaca.

In collaboration with the Centre for the History of Tompkins County, the theme this year focused on the newspaper accounts of two children in 1855, he said.

Carry Manning was 13 when she wrote her diary in 1869, Abner and Thomas was 23 when he wrote his account in 1865, Kepner said. Drawing on newspaper extracts, Cornell Plantations staff has created interactive activities that mimics life in the forest Home of the 19th century.Throughout the arboretum, attendants can participate in rolling candles, straw and corn husking a variety of stands.

Erica Evans, a volunteer who ran the stand of nut cracking, discussed the context of his argument.

"Black walnut, and all kinds of nuts, was something extraordinary in the 1800s because they are a wonderful source of protein," says Evans.

Costumes reflecting the period of time, adult volunteers painted more than 100 occupations registered in the census of 1855 Tompkins County.Kepner said that volunteers made their own costumes borrowed from the Historical Center.

Volunteers ran from Cornell and Ithaca College students to local farmers. Margaret Ball, a vegetable farmer, operated a booth where children are root vegetables with their names.
