Fall Arts 2011
Morlock’s method for large-scale public art installations tends to be improvisational. For “Nets,” the installation she created in Skagaströnd, Iceland during a month-long residency last August, Morlock surveyed the local scene and spoke to residents before determining the shape and material of her work. Inspired by the fishing heritage of the seaside village and the brightly hued netting she discovered at the local dump, Morlock fabricated viridian green and cyan blue nets and wrapped them around large wooden spools, invocating the sea in its natural splendor as well as conjuring a sense of the unnatural fibers that inhabit the sea. During a recent visit to the ReStore, Jake Bynum, ReStore supervisor, steered Morlock toward “this yellow fabric material that looks a lot like a loosely woven bright yellow plastic brillo pad.” He had a dozen rolls of the stuff, each 40 inches wide by 40 feet long, and he gave it – all of it - to the artist for free. Next, based on a hunch, Morlock contacted Lower Valley Energy in search of the same large wooden spools she had used in Iceland. The Fall Arts Festival draws artists and spectators from all corners of the country, yet the opening of Kathryn Mapes Turner’s solo exhibition sings of the valley’s own environment. Turner grew up on Triangle X Ranch and spent her youth riding, exploring, and observing the landscape around her. Being surrounded by the dramatic lighting and geography of the Jackson Valley, Turner developed a deeply intertwined relationship with art and nature. Although she now travels all over the world to paint and is recognized nationally as an emerging fine art painter, Turner still believes the most spectacular scenery in the world is right here in Wyoming. Above all, her love for art is not within the final product, but the creative quest she must embark on in her artistic pursuits.Jackson Hole National Museum Of Wildlife - News
