With Carol Bartz Out, Is Yahoo a Takeover Target?

It almost happened under her predecessor. And now with the firing of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz after a rocky two-and-half years, is the company ripe for a sale, or a breakup? (We’ll play Carnac and predict your first thought: Ugh, this again? We feel exactly the same.)

You see, the takeover or breakup of Yahoo has been an endless string of failed efforts, pitches, rumors and stupid ideas. For more on this, we turn to the moment of Original Sin: Microsoft’s February 2008 unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo for $45 billion, or about $31 a share.

Months of will-they-or-won’t-they deal drama ensued. Microsoft went as high as $33. Frankly, it all got a bit tiresome. And then Yahoo said no for the thousandth time, and Microsoft took its billions and went home. Enter Carol Bartz, hired to be the anti-Jerry Yang, Yahoo’s co-founder and mushy CEO.

Naturally, the departure of Bartz and the installation of an multi-headed team of bosses leaves Yahoo possibly vulnerable for a takeover again. And Yahoo is open to selling to the right bidder, as our colleagues Amir Efrati and Joann Lublin reported . (Or, the New York Times’ s source said a Yahoo sale is a “non-starter.” Isn’t that just fitting? Nothing about Yahoo is clear cut.)

But we don’t think Microsoft will want to come back for a second round. For its part, Microsoft was pleased as punch that it didn’t buy Yahoo at the price it was offering. Within months of its failed Yahoo crusade, the world economy nearly collapsed, and Yahoo’s stock price along with it. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in 2008 acknowledged he was “bailed out of this economy by Yahoo .”

Plus, Microsoft now is getting the milk without buying the cow. Microsoft struck a deal two years ago to handle Web searches on Yahoo’s websites for ten years, and share ad revenue from Web searches. Of course if Microsoft were still interested, Yahoo’s stock price is way cheaper than the sub-$20 level when Ballmer came knocking the first time bearing buckets of ducats. Yesterday, Yahoo shares closed at $12.91.

When you go online check all of the travel companies. Most of the larger travel sites are actually run by the airline companies which means you may not be getting the best deal. Check out the websites that are not affiliated with the airlines. They are independent and can offer you excellent pricing. Also check the airlines international websites.
