Activities abound in county

Local apple producers will not be supplying apples this year but other Missouri growers will fill the festival’s need, according to a spokesperson from the Seymour Area Chamber of Commerce.

The schedule kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday with “In Honor” in the gazebo on the Seymour square. This is scheduled to be followed by a pet show, two gospel sings led by High Strung and the introduction of Apple Princess contestants between the gospel sings.

Senior citizens’ activities at the gazebo will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday. The Rusty Rose Band will perform at the gazebo from 4-7 p.m. A street dance featuring Leland Martin will take place at the main stage beginning at 7:30 p.m. and continuing at 9:30 p.m., following the 9 p.m. coronation of the Apple Princess.

A 5K “fun run” kicks off Saturday’s festivities at 7:30 a.m., with registration at 7 a.m. in the Price Cutter parking lot. A decorated bicycle contest will be held at 9 a.m. at the gazebo; apple pies can be entered for judging at Seymour United Methodist Church between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. in the gazebo.

The Johnny Appleseed Contest, a costume contest for children, will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the gazebo. It is scheduled to be followed by a parade on the square at 10 a.m.

A number of musical performances highlight the day’s events, including the Shrine Band (10:45 a.m., southwest corner of the square), the Seymour Schools music department (11 a.m., main stage), the Hillcrest High School Highlander Drum Corp (11:30 a.m., west side of the square), Wires and Wood (4-7 p.m., gazebo) and Bad Habit Band (from 7:30 p.m. until the festival ends, with Seymour Merchant Association drawings interspersed throughout, on the main stage).

Other events include a quilt show in the Pennington Building (10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., south side of the square); children’s games (beginning at 11 a.m., southwest side of Downtown Park); the Hands for Christ puppet team (noon, main stage); the annual “world championship” apple-peeling contest (1 p.m., gazebo); a reunion of apple orchard workers (2-3 p.m., “School Mom’s Building” museum and gallery); a dance routine by the Apple Princess contestants; and auctions of the apple pie entries (3-4:30 p.m., silent auction for non-winning entries at the Merchant’s Association stand; 3:15 p.m., live auction at the gazebo for the winning entries.
