Port Hood cheers Kraft Celebration Tour

Port Hood won a place on the tour by besting Ingonish Beach following two weeks of online voting.

It was a contest sponsored by Kraft to fund sports-related facilities by providing $25,000 to each of the 10 Canadian towns which had won a spot on the tour. In each case, a cheque presentation was followed immediately by a live broadcast of TSN’s SportsCentre.

The money awarded to the Port Hood organizing committee will be spent on upgrades to the Al MacInnis Sports Centre.

“The boiler system needs work, the hot water heating needs work, our scoreboard needs some repairs and upgrades as well, so the money will definitely be put to good use,” said Roberta Watts, chair of the Port Hood organizing committee.

She said it’s unclear exactly how the $25,000 prize money will be divvied up to fix the arena’s problems because the cost of the upgrades must be reviewed first.

Watts, who grew up in Port Hood but now lives in New Glasgow, sent out the nomination on behalf of the community.

In the 4,000-word essay, she focused on describing the local area, and the community spirit that’s alive and well in the village of more than 1,000 people. In choosing the finalists, the Kraft contest also indicated it wanted to know what the facility means to the community and how it could be used to promote active living and a healthier lifestyle.

Despite foreboding skies, there were no plans to cancel the event.

There were a couple of light rain showers early on in the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to keep families away.

“Hopefully, cross your fingers, it’ll stay away for the rest of the evening,” Andrea Scott said.

Scott was joined by her husband and two children. The Port Hood native lives down the road in Long Point.

“It’s Port Hood pride. I grew up here and used the rink my whole life, and my kids go there now,” she said.

TSN staff members were also busy pumping up the crowd of mostly teenagers and young adults by throwing T-shirts, Frisbees and plastic balls off the stage.

All tickets for the game had been sold long before the tragedy. Soon after the sad news spread worldwide, the game’s organizers decided to arrange a mass at the arena, honoring the legacy of the team.

Not a single ticket had been returned as the ceremony was held in the packed arena.Each spectator brought flowers. All the Belarusian leadership, including President Aleksandr Lukashenko, were present at the event.

Never was the arena that silent as 37 huge portraits of the players and staff were placed on the ice. A requiem mass was performed by an orchestra, while portraits of the departed Yaroslavl friends and icons appeared on the scoreboard.

Each picture was met with a storm of applause, after which the Dynamo players scored a puck each in their own net.

Similar ceremonies were held on Thursday evening in a dozen Russian and CIS cities.

To the great Russian nation, to all sport organizations, and families of young hockey team lost in the most tragic accident of airplane crash, I am expressing my deepest sympathy.  When the best of young men end their lives so early there is nothing that can replace them in the hearts and minds of their families and friends.  All sportiest of the world, as well as the people of pure hearts, grieve for the people lost in this unfortunate accident.  May God give to the young athletes  lost in real tragedy a peace in heaven and may their memory be eternal.
