When disaster strikes, David Neal is ready offer help from the Red Cross
Jasonville resident Dave Neal was in Linton in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Aug. 31 after receiving a phone call from Linton dispatch a home was on fire.A blaze at the home of Jackie Jones, also a Red Cross volunteer, started at 2:30 a.m. and Neal was on the scene by 3 a.m., ATM card in hand.
Neal is the Greene County Red Cross Disaster Relief Coordinator. When there is a residential fire in Greene County, southern Clay County, western Monroe County and eastern Sullivan County, he is on the scene no matter what time of day or night.
His basement is equipped with four cell phones, several scanners, two computers and a printer.
"There are over 160 (scanner) channels I cover," Neal explained.
He uses his own car, his own gasoline, and his own time to respond to these people in crisis.
He, as a member of the Red Cross, makes sure people have clothes on their backs and a roof over their head while insurance companies process claims, which would normally leave those facing disaster homeless.
When dispatch calls Neal or he hears of a home fire on one of the scanners, he heads directly to the burning house.
"I go and evaluate the situation and number of children involved, then we come up with the amount of money," he explained.
From there he gives the family a debit card with the specified amount of money, and he goes home to activate it on his computer.
He stops at the nearest motel to make sure the family has a place to stay, if needed. He has even made arrangements with the Ronald McDonald House in the past to have a family stay while their badly burnt son was at Riley Children's Hospital.
Along with helping those facing disaster, the Red Cross helps make sure military men and women can get home to their families in times of medical emergencies and deaths.
Neal said the Red Cross has to check with funeral homes and hospitals to make sure everything is accurate.
