Table Talk: Jamie Oliver takes obesity war global; making better school ...

At the digital kitchen table, today's hot topics include British chef Jamie Oliver calling for a global war on obesity, plus fast food trying to get a slice of the food-stamp pie, how to make better school lunches, and a video featuring astoundingly sexist coffee ads.

Obesity fight goes global: One of the leading voices in recent years about good nutrition and the fight against obesity has been British chef Jamie Oliver.During his two seasons escape his reality food show "Jamie Oliver food revolution" made the link between school breakfast bad and the growing rate of obesity and diabetes among young people in the United States. Now Oliver is concerned that Western diets are beginning to take root in developing countries around the globe. In one week last World Youth Conference in Switzerland, he noted that in places like India, South America and the Middle East, convenience foods prepackaged and fast food are seen as "modern." Increased consumption of these foods can cause a global outbreak of food-related illnesses. "They look set to create an absolute catastrophe over the next 30 to 40 years if nothing changes."

Of course, with any change comes the inevitable push-back from companies that are more concerned with their bottom line than their customers' health. Now fast-food giants like Taco Bell and Pizza Hut are hoping to cash in on food stamps , and are lobbying for changes in regulations that prevent them from being used for prepared food. That's alarming to health advocates who contend that encouraging more fast-food consumption is not in the best public interest.

Packing lunches that will get eaten: If you're a parent who is concerned about the quality of food that's served in school lunches, one solution is to pack your children's lunch. But what can you put in the lunch box that's sure to get eaten?

Should Fast Food Restaurants Accept Food Stamps?

How can they eat fast food on $18.00/day? The equals out to about $4.25/day per person. That sounds like an "UnHappy Meal". Think of the monied interests that would exploit the food stamp program. This is a bad idea. Great for fast food companies and

Are fast food places to blame for obesity, or are people? | Diabetes ...

No fast food places aren’t to blame, they are trying to make money just like anyone else. People have a choice, either they get fattening fast food or make something healthy at home. I don’t remember anyone ever holding a gun to my head and telling me I have to eat fast food or they will blow my head off. And even if you have to eat out, there are healthier alternatives- delis! People need to stop blaming other people for them being fat.

They can be blamed but it is only better to really blame the person who eats there. The fast food places only provide the food that the customer requires and you can only blame the person who goes there so much that they over do it and they ruin their health. So you can only really blame the person who chooses to go to eat at a fast food place.

When is the last time anyone was planted in front of a TV, their door was suddenly kicked in and a kid from the local DQ accosted them with a double cheeseburger, fries, soda and frozen treat. Gun to the victim’s head, the pimply kid growls, “Eat it, or I plaster your brains on your custom Snuggie?” Never? Maybe this is more like it: Mr. /Ms. Doe sits down to watch TV with a soda (or beer), popcorn (movie theater butter, of course), bonbon of choice and whatever else makes it from hand to mouth. Is this ritual the TV makers fault? Is it the networks’ fault? The furniture maker’s fault? No, no, and no. Life is about choices. Like it or not, people get to make stupid or even dangerous choices. You wanna fight obesity? MAKE THE OBESE OWN THEIR CHOICES. Raise their insurance rates, raise their deductibles, make them pay out of pocket for procedures or complications that arise from their choices. Enabling a behavior (fat people get to be fat without owning it) encourages more of the same. There’s pretty simple psychology at play here. If people have to consider the consequences of their choices, they may (gasp!) make better choices. Responsible people who indulge once in a while shouldn’t get screwed because of the hogs among us and neither should service providers who are selling a legal product people are willing to pay for.
