Digging deep into purple and Blackmore's back catalog
I almost gave this column the headline “A Week of Weedly-Wee,” because there’s so much soloing throughout these double-disc concert releases, four from Deep Purple and one from the most classic line-up of Rainbow. But I decided not to because this is deluxe, high-quality jam from when live albums were often more than record-contract fillers.
Each of the first four double-discs contains the deepest of Deep Purple’s onstage action. [MSRP $13.98]
‘Scandinavian Nights,’ Deep Purple (Eagle Records, HHHH)
This Aug. 16 double dose of high-octane power rock from 1970 features most folks’ favorite Deep Purple lineup: lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover. Recorded for Swedish radio while on tour in support of their groundbreaking In Rock album, the band, an already well-oiled machine rips through elongated versions of “Speed King,” “Into The Fire,” “Child In Time,” “Wring That Neck,” a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” (as a Paice drum solo), “Mandrake Root” and “Black Night.”
Purple officially released the seminal live album “Made in Japan” a few years later; by that time some lengthy instrumentals had been shortened or replaced by compositions by the “Mark II” team. This release and the one below it show the development of Purple’s live prowess and repertoire.
‘In Concert 1970-1972,’ Deep Purple (Eagle Records, HHHH)
This Aug. 16 two-CD package features the same lineup in two different recorded shows for the BBC. The 1970 show features four songs stretched out to almost 50 minutes not long after Gillan and Glover joined. Two songs from the upcoming “In Rock” album: “Speed King,” “Child In Time;” followed by Mark I mostly instrumental rave-ups “Wring That Neck” and “Mandrake Root.” In the ’72 concert, they performed every song off their classic “Machine Head” album (except “Pictures Of Home”), including a 21-minute version of “Space Truckin’.
