Susan Zahn was excited when a couple of new neighbors moved in on either side of her business, Pearl Day Spa, four years ago. So she approached the owners of La Perla Pizzeria and Vero Espresso House and suggested that the three businesses get together and hold an open house for their block, the 1300 block of Pearl Street.

“I’ve been in my building for a while — we just had our 10-year anniversary,” Zahn said, “We were the only little, tiny place on the block for years. Nothing was really going on. I thought a block party would be fun, and it would be good for them and good for me.”

Some other nearby businesses heard about the planned party and asked if other businesses could join in.

“It kind of went crazy from there,” Zahn said.

Today, Zahn and her neighbors are expecting somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 guests as they hold their third annual Eugene Pearl District Block Party.

Fifteen restaurants, coffee shops, spas, salons and other businesses — plus two churches — will throw open their doors to visitors.

Businesses will offer free samples of their goods and services in a festive atmosphere along with their hopes that visitors will like what they see, feel and taste and come back as customers.

Zahn, for example, will be offering different spa services in each of her nine treatment rooms. She’ll have a harp player in the lounge, drums in the back, samples from Umpqua Dairy and New Dawn Bakery, “and roller derby girls skating around,” she said. “It’s like a party in a box.”

A large component of the event is the time and money that the participants put into preparing their premises and planning what to offer.

The actual event budget is tiny, about $3,000 to $3,500 a year, most of which goes for marketing: print advertisements, posters and balloons, Zahn said. “We said, ‘What’s cheap and easy and will get attention?’ Balloons! So we put balloons all over the place.
