Jessica Matos has been looking for a job for the past three years.

"It's a great program," she said. "They really want the best for you."

Matos is one of several people with a mental illness who receives assistance at the Wellness Center to re-enter the work force and again become an active member of society.

The Wellness Center recently received a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. CARF is an independent nonprofit that provides accreditation for health and human services, said Cara Rupp, lead clinician at the center. Preparation to earn the accreditation had been in the works for about three years.

The Wellness Center contracts with the California Department of Rehabilitation, which requires the center to be CARF-certified, Rupp said. The program started in 2007, and it soon began to prepare for accreditation. It's now the only center with CARF certification in the area for employment services, she said.

Rupp said receiving the accreditation shows that the center is constantly trying to improve its services. One of the many things the center offers is employment services.

The center was able to get 15 people employed during the 2010 fiscal year, said Aaron Eubanks, a vocational rehabilitation counselor at the center. So far in the 2011 fiscal year, two people have found a job and four others are in the process. "We are unique in providing employment services," he said.

Staff members at the center want people with a mental illness to know they're also capable of working, Rupp said.

Matos said Eubanks has helped her with mock interviews, ways to handle herself during interviews and how to prepare her résumé. The next step will be looking for a job.
