MEDFORD, Ore. -- As temperatures crept into the 90's Thursday afternoon hundreds of volunteers worked to build one family their dream home.
They spent the day working for free even though some of them don't have jobs of their own.
"There are a lot of people here who don't have jobs," said Rush Behnke with Ark Build. "They have been out of work for a year, their severely injured by our economy, but being here they have smiles on their faces."
Around 2,500 people and dozens of local businesses are volunteering to help with Extreme Home Makeover.
Almost everything from the walls to the water bottles are donations. Without the help of those volunteers the home may not have been as nice as it will be now.
Ken Snelling with Ark Build says the cost of building the home would have been between $350,000 and $400,000.
But it’s all being done mostly for free through donations, even at a time when many construction companies are struggling to stay open.
Brian Stephenson the owner of Bear Construction says there is essentially no construction industry in the Rogue Valley anymore.
“We’re looking at if from the point, woah, what’s going to happen next?” he said. “We don’t know.”
Although his business has been hit hard Stephenson didn’t hesitate to volunteer.
“It’s just time to give back,” he said.
Behnke says more than 3,000 people signed up to volunteer. Some came from as far away as Hawaii.

Also, driven by the regulations referenced above, purchases of clean energy technologies are often mandated by renewable portfolio standards, federal/state/local incentives or building construction financial models developed decades ago.
But this is going to have a huge impact during construction with hundreds of jobs being created and then spreading to the grocery stores when people spend their money." The Medford Land Development Committee reviewed the matter in May,
“It's just as easy to fly to Medford, Ore., (from the North Slope) as it is to Fairbanks or Anchorage,” he said. Doyon Ltd. Vice President Jim Johnsen said the Fairbanks-based regional Native corporation also has had trouble maintaining its in-state
