Here's a sampling of what commissioners heard tonight:

 Tom Hughes, Metro president, who supports the county's proposed measure: "Urban renewal is a good tool. It has its flaws, it has its challenges, but by and large, it's a good tool. The real secret advantage to urban renewal is that the funding really comes from the growth in value of the property, so consequently, if you're successful, then the place pays for itself and then that minimizes the amount of general fund money you have to spend for other projects."
Thomas Eskridge, Molalla resident and co-chief petitioner of Sellwood Bridge vehicle registration fee referendum, who opposes the county's proposed measure: "It's not your money you're squandering. You are here in this meeting to pervert the will of the people. The people are speaking again, but you're not listening."
Kim Parker, Canby resident and executive director of Clackamas County Business Alliance and Workforce Investment Council of Clackamas County, who supports the county's proposed measure: "We need jobs. Urban renewal districts help create jobs through increased economic activity. Where those job-creating urban renewal districts exist should be left up to local voters. Decisions should be made locally."
Janet Schoenheit, Milwaukie resident, who opposes the county's proposed measure: "Urban renewal belongs in the hands of the voters of Clackamas County to decide if it's worth the price, since the people of Clackamas County are the ones who are going to have to pay for it.
