SYSTEM UPDATE: Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program launches today

ARE YOU A 3DS AMBASSADOR?
Or maybe the better question is this: Do you know what the heck a 3DS Ambassador is?
No, it's not some elite club that meets once a month for dinner and drinks and it won't get you a fancy gold pin that you'll never ever wear. It actually means that you were one of those poor souls who didn't listen to our review of the Nintendo 3DS and wait until the holidays to pick up the glassless 3D console.
Instead, you ran out and played Bejeweled on your cell phone as you waited in a line behind a zit-faced dork who'd saved an entire year's worth of allowances just so he could have a shiny new 3DS. Then, you shelled out enough money for five high-end oil changes (that's $250, if you're keeping track at home) to purchase your very own 3DS.
And because you overpaid for a giant, 3D-producing paperweight, Nintendo has now made you a 3DS Ambassador. It's the gaming giant's way of apologizing for overcharging you back in March, just a few months before it announced an August price drop due to toilet-bowl-level sales.It's not perfect, but hey, at least they're trying. (Side note: It's been a year of apologies for video game companies, right? Remember: Sony let everyone download "inFamous" after leaving our credit card numbers for some hackers).
As of Thursday, you are now entitled to download 20 free games from the 3DS eShop. Ten games are already available and 10 more free GameBoy Advance titles will be available by the end of the year.
The currently available games are all NES classics, led by the original "Super Mario Bros." and "Legend of Zelda," and, sad as it may be to say, they're among the best games on the console. It's a shame Nintendo didn't upscale these games to 3D, as it did with "ExciteBike" shortly after E3, but hey we won't fault them. After all, they're just scrambling to save their technological wonder from the discount bin.
