'American Horror Story' Recap "Halloween, Part 1"
'S Halloween episode should be messed up. You want the episode to completely blow your mind. "Halloween Part 1" did not disappoint.We start the episode in 2010- the house is now home to that gay couple that the real estate woman keeps talking about. We see a familiar face- Zachary Quinto! Quinto plays Chad, part of the interior designing couple. Quinto's performance is really amazing- it's nuanced without being over the top. Who knew such a two dimensional homosexual character would appear on this show? Quinto's opposite is an actor named Teddy Sears does a fine job as Patrick, Chad's boyfriend, but most of the time I was just thinking about how eerily similar he looked to Alexander Skarsgard.
Anyway, the couple is fighting, all while they make festive Halloween decorations. Patrick is cheating on Chad with his trainer, Chad is cold. Upon the admission of infidelity, "Is this crass admission supposed to hurt me? Because at this point, with you, I'm bulletproof."
(Great, now I have that La Roux song stuck in my head.)
Anyway, they get in a super nasty fight and Chad pouts over crafts in the living room. Suddenly, the gimp walks in. Chad, thinking that it's Peter's Halloween costume, starts to try and seduce it. At this point- honestly- people should start really asking who that thing is before they do something sexy with it. Anyway, the gimp attacks Chad and drowns him in the apple dunking trough. Patrick comes home to see this and you know he's done for too.
Back in present day, the house isn't getting a lot of buyers. The real estate lady convinces Vivian to hire some "fluffers" (whcih turns out is not the person who keeps people aroused on porno sets) to spruce up the home for Halloween so people won't have such a stigma against it. Because dressing your already haunted house up with fake coffins is a great idea. Or something.
Meanwhile next door one of Constance's "boyfriends" (also a Tim Riggins look alike) is reading a book about Halloween to Addie. He reads that the dead can walk around anywhere they want on Halloween. Addie tells him she wants to be a "pretty girl" for Halloween. Then Constance comes in and bless Jessica Lange's heart, is the craziest person alike. She sends her "boyfriend" to go pick up some cookie supplies and then lectures Addie on how she should stay away from her man. She basically flips out, calling Addie everything but mistake. It's vicious. Addie, obviously runs away.

Borneo's Endangered Orangutans Pay Price of Progress | Siam ...
Just a week after the last known Javan rhino was reported dead in Vietnam, a new study shows that orangutan hunting is on the rise in one of that animal’s last refuges, the Borneo region of Kalimantan. With swathes of forests being cleared for industry, the endangered primates are entering villages and plantations for food – leading villagers to kill them as pests or to eat them.
The conversion of Kalimantan’s forests into concessions for logging, pulp and paper and mining has long been a threat to the survival of the orangutan. But it is not the only one.
Dr. Erik Meijaard is the chief scientist behind the survey conducted by The Nature Conservancy, an environmental advocacy group. He says that shrinking forests go hand in hand with the mounting slaughter of endangered orangutans by local communities.
Dr. Meijard says bushmeat is part of the local lifestyle, so even if hunters are not looking for orangutans, they will eat them when they catch them.
“A lot of people like orangutan meat. I mean, people describe it as a sweet meat that has a good taste apparently. So I think that once people do have an orangutan they are quite happy to eat it… The average hunter in Borneo will be targeting pigs and deer. They are the biggest animals with the most meat. But sometimes if you don’t get anything and you can catch an orangutan you’ll take it.”
Conducted in more than 600 villages in Kalimantan, the survey showed that orangutans are sometimes deliberately targetted.
Local villagers told the researchers that oil palm companies have paid them to eradicate the endangered animals. The companies see them as pests, explains Dr. Damayanti, a lecturer in Ecology at the Agriculture Institute in Bogor who was involved in the study.
“The are instances when the community can get money if they kill orangutan because companies who see orangutan as a threat really want to decrease the population of orangutan,” said Damayanti. “So if people can present some remnants of orangutan body parts, they can get money out of it. … There is an incentive although of course none of the companies would acknowledge that, but when you go and talk to the local people then yeah.
