From Sideways to Upright: Alexander Payne Evolves with The Descendants
Sideways is a film perfect. The more you look the more it reveals itself. It is a story of a man very selfishly wrong slamming forward - his book, his break, his misery. If given any redemption by the end of the film is because they are terms of being an asshole. But the offspring is more than his personal journey of self-discovery, it is about selflessness, and how most of us are really not here to polish our own buttons 24 / 7 but to look out for other especially those we are responsible, those we are leaving behind.
I loved this film.
Be careful this time of year to avoid overflow of enthusiasm to see a really wonderful film like this to deflate during the awards season for every reason except the only reason - that n is not good enough. It's more than enough. But this might not stop people from wanting to hate (in the end, we are creatures small enough, in fact).Although positioned as a major Oscar, and the looks of it, it must meet those expectations, it's a film that can, fortunately, transcends the need for validation of 6000 voting members.
The Descendants is infused with love - love and all the emotions grotesque and beautiful that it draws out of us. It is both a statement of maturity by its star, George Clooney, who has never been so vulnerable and raw materials, and its director, who also hid behind the mask much easier to cynicism.This development, like Alexander Payne said in the Q & A after the film was undoubtedly caused by the four or five years Payne stopped making films, divorced, and had surgery. The film is surprising how much she resembles other works of the director, except in the gift he has with the players and the comic.
Sentimentality is sometimes disarming, as it seems to come from nowhere and lack of any output of poultry: some things are just too sad to make jokes about. So I admire Payne and George Clooney for the right to delve into this place to be in despair when someone close to us is dying.How much easier it would have been for each of them to turn away of the most tortuous. Instead, they seem to find the truth of this story of these characters.
