Tourist Trapped: The InterContinental Hotel

Tourist Trapped is a weekly Culture Blog post in which Beth Spotswood visits San Francisco's popular tourist destinations and reports back. This week: InterContinental San Francisco.

Sights, sounds, new experiences? Those are all nice perks of traveling. But the real and perhaps only reason to go anywhere is the magnificent excuse to stay in a hotel. Personally, I'd live in a hotel if I was made of money. Instead, I settle for an occasional getaway, which is why I spent this past weekend in a room at the InterContinental San Francisco .

I brought too many outfits, I lugged along all of my beauty products, I walked into my room and immediately slipped into a Frete robe. Screw my apartment with all of its personal touches and inherited furniture. I was finally home.

Which brings me to this week's Top 5 List: The Best Things About Staying In A Big Hotel:

1. Free Stuff: One could certainly go to Target and get mini toiletries, bottled water, single-use ground coffee and a newspaper. But somehow, even though a fancy hotel room will run at least two or three hundred bucks, the free stuff is particularly exciting. The InterContinental is very into being 'green' and LEED certified so all of the shampoos and body lotions are organic and biodegradable. I regard this as one of the few minuses of my experience, but only because I love a disgusting, over-fragranced, dyed pink, chemical packed beauty product. The IC has hippie products, which isn't to say that I didn't steal them all.

2. The Club Lounge: When one is given access to the Club Lounge, one is given access to bottled sodas, cappuccinos, cubed cheese, fruit-at-the-bottom yogurt, sliced melon, magazines, papers, CNN and an open bar. One must use key and then sign in, adding to the exclusivity of this club, which much like the Red Carpet Room or Safeway, is available to everyone who knows how to work the system. I could spend all day, every day sitting around the Club InterContinental Lounge eavesdropping on tourists, caring about cable news personalities and trying out all of the different flavors of tea. Again, while it all adds up to a chunk of change, it FEELS free. And that's what really matters.

Autopsy Report On 'Glee 3D Concert Movie'

It should have been released during the season so the ad promos could bumper the show. And the stupid limited release feels gimmicky. Just maker it like a movie we're used to movie marketing. Thus felt like an event marketing campaign and much if the

I spent Saturday morning watching the great San Francisco film, "The Game." Ordering a movie from Pay-Per-View doesn't really count, as it doesn't meet our "free stuff" requirement. The serendipity of finding something perfect on television is so much

Then, Alex and I went to WJAR for our 12-hour shift. Don't feel bad for us though, our Operation Manager Phil Schneid slept in a live truck on the beach, so he could do morning live shots. That was after he worked an 18-hour day on Saturday.

The End Of ABC's Saturday Morning - GAC Forums

I miss the old saturday morning cartoons: bump in the night, reboot, muppet babies, bugs bunny and tweety show, winnie the pooh, x-men... heck i miss my childhood and all cartoons i used to watch. saturdays and weekdays alike. inspector gadjet, dennis the menace, captain planet, the disney afternoon line ups, and kids wb. ah, the gold ole days. now is a whole bunch of crap for tweens that i can't stand. the jonas brothers, hannah montana, and all these stuff just annoy the heck out of me Indeed. The upstart networks like Fox, and WB had more of an impact on Saturday mornings in their early days, and the old line networks just couldn't compete. Especially since 'The Children's Television Act' tied their hands up. While cable channels have been around while Saturday morning line ups were still viable, they would eventually become the only place where TV cartoons can thrive anymore while the broadcast networks air local news, infomercials, and worthless tween fodder.
