The Fredonia First United Methodist Church celebrates its bicentennial with a pastor very enthusiastic, a rich history and an abundance of upcoming events planned for the community to get involved?

"There are not many things in life can be a part of that have a history of 200 years," said the Rev. Steve Wiggers.

Wiggers was a pastor for 25 years, serving in Magnolia, North Harmony, and Panama Arkport United Methodist Church and as of July 2010, he became the pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia.

"I've always been a part of a community of faith, back to my early education in North Clymer," Wiggers said. "This is really walking in a pure celebration of 200 years. It gives us a chance to really look back on history. So it's a real privilege to be named here when we look back on the shoulders of giants who came before us. It is a blessing in itself ... Will keep the rich heritage of the early pioneers. It is a joyful responsibility. "

At the helm of the preparations for celebration is the president Shirley Erbsmehl.

"The committee began brainstorming for the last year," she said."We have held monthly meetings and we are always coming up with new and creative things to enhance the celebration."

The Committee of the Jubilee, as it is called, in charge of the bicentennial celebration includes Erbsmehl, Wiggers, Wally Latimer, Sandy Albano, Faxlanger Barb, Karen Kwiatkowski, Joe Faxlanger, Dorothy Fitch, Marilyn Blue, Joyce Haines, Norene Schulenberg, Linda Cooper and Tom Cooper.

"To raise community awareness of the celebration, a banner 14 feet long was placed on the educational wing of the Church," said Erbsmehl."In March small discussion groups met for the period of Lent, which lasted six weeks in members' homes. There were 51 people who gathered in about six different houses, because that is how the Methodist Church was started with small groups of people gathered together.
